Provisional Patent Application
A provisional patent application (PPA) is an effective, fast, and cheap way to safeguard your place in line at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) while you decide whether to file a regular patent application. A PPA preserves your invention rights for up to one year -- without the toil and expense involved in filing a regular patent application.
A PPA consists of several pages of text (called the "specification") and drawings, both of which describe how to make and use your invention.
Nolo Now will help you create the specification, allow you to upload and review your drawings, and create the cover sheet required by the USPTO. We then submit your application electronically and send you the proof of filing with other helpful materials.
Image Upload
Protect your invention by including drawings or photos of your invention. Nolo Now will help you upload your digital images, then you will describe each image for your specification. Your drawings must be in one of these formats: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, or .png.
Electronic Acknowledgement of Submission
When the USPTO receives your application, they will generate an electronic acknowledgement as proof of receipt. We'll send this acknowledgement on to you, along with a hard copy of your application and four important contracts.
Four Essential Agreements for Inventors
When we send you the hard copy of your application and the USPTO's acknowledgement of filing, we'll also send you four important contracts that will help you further protect your invention.
- Nondisclosure Agreement. Use this agreement if you're showing your invention to someone -- for example, a potential licensee, manufacturer or colleague -- and you want to keep your invention a secret.
- Joint Ownership Agreement for Inventors. Use this agreement if you co-own your invention with someone else -- for example, a business partner or another inventor -- and you want to preserve ownership rights, obligations, and revenues.
- Artist or Model-Maker Agreement. Use this agreement if you're hiring someone to create drawings or create a prototype of your invention.
- Assignment of Invention Rights. Use this agreement if you are transferring all or part of your invention rights to someone. For example, use this agreement to transfer your invention rights to your corporation or to a partnership.
